LEAGUE CITY, Texas 鈥� League City EMS has begun equipping its ambulances with whole blood supplies to improve the survival rates for patients with severe blood loss.
Lieutenant Blake Brazze stated that carrying whole blood, a first for any EMS service in Galveston County, is crucial for patients with major hemorrhages, reported.
鈥淭ypically, when you go to the hospital, you will get one of those components separate,鈥� Brazze said. 鈥淏ut the whole blood 鈥� hence the word 鈥榳hole鈥� 鈥� has everything in it and that鈥檚 why it鈥檚 an advantage to our patients.鈥�
The department鈥檚 current use of whole blood applies to the city鈥檚 primary response vehicle, with plans to equip all League City ambulances within the next two years.
鈥淚t is like a pilot program by having it in just our shift captain鈥檚 vehicle,鈥� EMS Chief Nicole Smith said. 鈥淎ll of our medics have been trained, however, our captains are going to be the primary personnel to initiate that transfusion if a patient requires it.鈥�
