MOBILE, Ala. — Police have arrested a driver involved in the death of a Mississippi EMT who was working at a crash scene.
On Dec. 31, an ASAP EMS ambulance crew stopped at the scene of a motor vehicle accident in Mobile, Alabama, while returning to their quarters in Laurel, Mississippi, rǰٱ.
ASAP EMS EMT Mary “Katie” Pipkin was treating a patient when they were both struck by a vehicle driven by Michael Thomas.
Pipkin was pronounced dead on the scene and the patient was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, rǰٱ.
Mobile police stated that Thomas showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody. He is charged with manslaughter, assault, and felony driving under the influence.
reported that Thomas has prior arrests for driving under the influence.
In a Facebook post, ASAP EMS stated Pipkin “set a standard in EMS to follow,” and that she was an inspiration to her coworkers.
