Ind. county EMS among 16 organizations to receive public safety grants

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. 鈥 NIPSCO has announced 16 organizations as recipients of the 2024 Public Safety Education and Training Action Grant.

Locally, the LaGrange firefighters will receive a grant to supply carbon monoxide detectors for medic bags.

Over the past seven years, NIPSCO鈥檚 Public Safety Education and Training Action Grant has funded a total of 110 projects geared toward community and youth public safety education projects, as well as training for first responders, police and fire departments. Some of these include lithium-ion battery response training, carbon monoxide training and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training for residents and first responders.


Why smaller EMS agencies need grant funding, and four programs to look into

The 2024 program recipients received grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 each.

The recipients of NIPSCO鈥檚 2024 Public Safety Education and Training Action Grant are:

  • American National Red Cross 鈥 Disaster preparedness in NWI
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater NWI 鈥 Trauma-informed crisis intervention staff certification
  • Cass County Emergency Management Agency 鈥 Fire service rapid intervention team
  • Cedar Lake Fire Department 鈥 Public safety education and first responder training initiative
  • Delphi Police Department 鈥 Citizen gun safety course
  • City of East Chicago Fire Department 鈥 Fire prevention programs
  • Cleveland Township Fire Department 鈥 Fire safety education house
  • Crown Point Police Department 鈥 School resource officer protection
  • Dyer Firefighters Association 鈥 Enhancing community risk reduction
  • Franciscan Alliance Foundation 鈥 CPR and AED demo blitz
  • LaGrange Firefighters 鈥 Supply carbon monoxide detectors for medic bags
  • Lake County Homeland Security/EMA 鈥 Lithium-ion battery safety
  • Lutheran Social Services of Indiana 鈥 Gear-Up Safety Program
  • MAAC Foundation 鈥 First Responder Appreciation Day
  • Pulaski County Emergency Medical Services 鈥 Emergency medical responder education
  • Town of Long Beach 鈥 Youth Safety Adventure Camp
