KNOX COUNTY, Ind. 鈥 Six people were injured, with two airlifted to an Evansville hospital, after an underground mining accident in northern Knox County early Friday morning.
At about 12:55 a.m., Knox County sheriff鈥檚 deputies responded to the Sunrise Coal Mine on Perry Road near Bruceville in response to an underground accident.
Deputies helped provide medical assistance to the six injured workers, with two injured workers airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
The other four were taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.
鈥淭he accident appears to have been a collision involving the mine ride,鈥 according to a news release from the Knox County Sheriff鈥檚 Office. 鈥淭he Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating this accident.鈥
The injured worker鈥檚 names will not be released until all family notifications have been made, the sheriff鈥檚 office said.
Knox County Central Dispatch confirmed this incident occurred just before midnight at a Sunrise Coal Mine facility in northern Knox County.
The mine owned by Sunrise Coal LLC, a subsidiary of Hallador Energy, is located near Oaktown on Agri Care Road but has an entry portal on Perry Road near Bruceville, according to PBS Vincennes.
