GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. 鈥 Anthony 鈥淎.J.鈥 Haymore, a paramedic with Guilford County Emergency Services, was recognized by the Piedmont Triad Area Red Cross as the 2024 Emergency Medical Services Hero during the Salute to Heroes event in High Point.

Haymore was honored with Sgt. Dale Nix of the Greensboro Police Department, who was posthumously named the 2024 Law Enforcement Hero during the same event.

Haymore was recognized for his actions in relation to the shooting death of Nix in December 2023.

On Dec. 20, Haymore was on duty in a single-provider quick-response vehicle. He was at the Sheetz Gas Station on Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax filling his ambulance with fuel when he heard gunfire. Without regard for his safety, Haymore moved towards danger and immediately began treating Nix. He was soon joined by off-duty Greensboro Police Officer Cameron Peach, who was also at the gas station at the time of the shooting. The two worked to administer lifesaving care. Nix died from his injuries later that day.

When he approached the scene, Haymore was not aware that it was Nix who was injured, according to the Red Cross. He described the experience as one where he saw someone in need and acted. He said Peach鈥檚 assistance was key in stabilizing Nix.

Haymore joined Guilford County EMS in September 2018 as an EMT. He attended the Guilford EMS Paramedic Academy in 2020 and became a senior paramedic in 2021.
